Dementia Care

Choice Dementia Services

  • We offer a personalized approach to providing care for those diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. From extensive questionnaire interviews before hiring our caregivers to around-the-clock staffing changes so your loved one has closer contact with someone familiar, our philosophy is based on need rather than a standard set of activities, they differ in how personalized the care-giving services are.

Most home care agencies provide a one size fits all approach to care giving. You can expect a caregiver from the agency to arrive with minimal advance notice at your home and not spend any more time on site than necessary - no more than an hour or so, unless it's agreed upon.

In addition, some companies imply that they are providing professional medical caregivers such as nurses. Of course, a nurse is not usually the caregiver sent to the family home.

Choice Dementia Services has highly trained Alzheimer’s’ and dementia specialists with great depth of knowledge as that is our one and only focus.

  • We are committed to the safety of our clients and caregivers. In light of the COVID pandemic, we have put in place the following safety procedures:

Our business model of one caregiver to one loved-one means that the risk of cross contamination among caregivers is minimized

All of our caregivers are screened for COVID regularly and are required to wear gloves and masks when providing care

We are disinfecting all common areas and surfaces multiple times per day

We are urging our clients and their families to follow all guidelines from the Health Canada and our practices are consistent with those followed by family physicians.

  • At Choice, we take our caregivers' training and screening seriously. We require all of our caregivers to complete a comprehensive training program that covers everything from speaking slowly and in a reassuring tone to creating a safe environment to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care best practices.

In addition, we conduct criminal background checks on all of our caregivers to ensure that you and your family member is safe and well taken care of.

All Health Care Assistance (HCAs, Caregivers) must go through a government program found at the Private Colleges and some schools.

The program is identical in content no matter where the HCA took the course, however we all know that not all HCAs are created equal.

We look for someone who has the that not so common, common sense, good social interaction skills, emotional connection, excellent communication skills and the ability to build social connections.

We explore their training, ask for a copy of their transcripts and speak with the instructor concerning attendance.

HCAs must be registered with the HCA agency and will provide their number.

Finally, they are required to produce the following:

Up to date criminal background check

    Job references

    Financial background check

    Letter from their personal doctor

    TB test

    Vaccination report

    Record of immunization

Red Cross Emergency First Aid/AED & CPR certification

    Work Safe documentation

    Medication Management Certification

    Food Safe Certification

    WHIMIS

    Drivers license abstract

    Business insurance
